The Catholic Church teaches that Mary, the Mother of Christ, was taken up Body and Soul into Heavenly Glory.
Many Christians scoff at this idea, however. Although the Blessed Mother's bodily Assumption into heaven is not recorded in Sacred Scripture, other such bodily assumptions are. Second Kings chapter 2 verse 11, tells us the prophet "Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind." Hebrews chapter 11 verse 5, says, "By faith Enoch was taken up to heaven so that he should not see death." Additionally, many important events from the life of Jesus are not chronicled in the Gospels. Even the death of his earthly father St. Joseph is not mentioned in Sacred Scripture, though we know it must have happened. Also, with Mary's high standing in the infant Church, why is it that no grave or remains of the Blessed Mother have ever been found? The Assumption of Mary is only one of many significant events in the life of the early Church that have been remembered and witnessed from Sacred Tradition.

While many Christians think this is impossible, the Assumption of Mary is consistent with the Blessed Mother's role as a Theotokos or "God-bearer." Mother Mary, the Immaculate sinless one, was chosen by God among all women ever created to bear the Christ in her body. Being free from all sin, Mary had no need to undergo the decay of death, which was the penalty for sin as we are told in Genesis Chapter 3 Verse 19. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains it this way, "The Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.“

Even though many Christians today do not agree with this belief, a look at Church history shows us that the Feast of our Lady's Assumption was already being celebrated in the Christian Church in Palestine in the 400's. This indicates that by the fifth century the Assumption was already a well established conviction of Christ's followers in the land where he and his mother had lived. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that "The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son's Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians." Sacred Tradition teaches that the Assumption was meant to give humans hope and consolation that what Jesus did for his mother, he will also do for all members of his Body in the Resurrection of the Dead at his Second Coming.
