The Catholic Church teaches that Mary, the Mother of Christ, is also the Queen of Heaven.
In the monarchy of King David, as well as in other ancient kingdoms, the mother of the ruling king held an important office in the royal court. In fact, the king’s mother ruled as queen, not his wife. The Blessed Mother's queenship is analogous to her son's kingship. She is truly a queen, because her son is the King of Kings and Lord of lords. Her exalted role among the saints in heaven also reflects her extraordinary position as the exemplar of faith and prototype of Christian disciples. St. John's vision of heaven in Revelation chapter 12 verses 1 & 5 speaks of a "woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars, she bore a son destined to rule all the nations." With such a beautiful scriptural portrait of Mary, is it any wonder she is called Queen of Heaven.

The Catholic Church teaches that Mary, the Mother of Christ, is also the Queen of Heaven.
The doctrine of Our Lady's queenship is by no means new. At the Annunciation in Luke chapter 1 verses 32 & 33, the Angel Gabriel greets the Blessed Mother then says, “You will bear a son. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever and his kingdom will have no end." Our Lady's queenship is thus seen as an association with Christ's Kingship. In addition, at the Visitation in Luke chapter 1 verse 43, Elizabeth exclaimed, "How does this happen to me that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?" - acknowledging Mary as "Mother of God" and "Mother of the King". If the kings of our worldly nations call their mothers ‘Queen’, how appropriate it is for Jesus, the King of Heaven and Earth, to proclaim his mother Queen.
